A garage door is the largest moving object in most buildings. It weighs more than people expect — a wide insulated double door runs well over 200 pounds — and it is held in balance by springs under enormous tension. When something goes wrong, it tends to go wrong in ways that are easy to misdiagnose and genuinely dangerous to guess at.
That is the problem we set out to solve properly. Our approach is not complicated: inspect the whole system rather than the part that looks broken, explain in plain terms what has actually failed and why, price the work before it starts, and put back components that are sized for your specific door rather than whatever was on the truck.

Freeze and thaw cycles, road salt, long cold spells and heavy snow load are what shorten the life of springs, seals and openers here, and they shape both how we service a door and what we recommend when one needs replacing.
The other thing worth saying plainly: we would rather repair a sound door than sell a new one. Most doors that people assume are finished need hardware, not replacement. When replacement genuinely is the better value we will say so, and explain exactly which part of the door led us there.

The diagnosis comes before the quote
A garage door is one system — door, springs, cables, rollers, tracks and opener — and the part that looks broken is frequently not the part that failed. A door that struggles and stalls looks like an opener problem and is almost always a spring problem. Checking the whole system first is what stops you paying for the wrong repair.
Parts get sized to your door
Springs are calculated for the actual weight and height of the door in front of us, including window inserts, and replaced in matched pairs. Fitting generic stock springs is quicker and it is the single most common reason a door is back out of balance within a year.
Repair gets recommended over replacement
If the sections are sound, a repair is the better spend nearly every time. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges and openers are all replaceable wear items. We recommend replacement when panels are rusted through, bent across several sections or no longer available — and we explain which of those applies.
The price is agreed before work starts
You get the number and the reasoning behind it, and you approve both, before anything is touched. If something is found mid-job that changes the picture, work stops and we talk to you rather than adding it to the bill.
Emergencies are treated as emergencies
A door stuck open is a security problem. A door jammed shut can trap a vehicle someone needs. Those calls are prioritised over routine scheduling rather than queued behind it.

Most garage door advice online is written for milder places. Here is what actually drives failures in Greater Montreal.
Freeze-and-thaw cycling
Montreal runs through the freezing point repeatedly rather than staying cold. Meltwater reaches the bottom of the door, refreezes overnight and bonds the seal to the slab — which the opener then reads as an obstruction.
Road salt at the base of the door
Salt arrives on vehicles and in meltwater and sits against the bottom section, the bottom brackets and the cable ends. That is where corrosion does structural damage, out of sight, long before anything shows on the painted face.
Cold and brittle steel
Springs are rated in cycles, and cold makes steel more brittle. A spring already near the end of its life is far more likely to fail on the coldest morning of the year, which is why January and February spring calls cluster so heavily.
Thickened grease and stiff hardware
Standard lubricants thicken in deep cold, so rollers and hinges drag and the opener works harder against friction that was not there in October. Using a cold-rated lubricant makes a genuine difference here.
