What usually goes wrong
These are the failures we are actually called out for, and what each one usually means.
The door will not lift, or lifts a few inches and stops
Usually a broken torsion spring. The opener is not strong enough to lift an unbalanced door, so it strains and stops. The spring, not the opener, needs replacing.
The door is crooked or one side hangs lower
A cable has slipped off the drum or snapped. The door should not be operated in that state — the remaining cable is carrying an uneven load.
The door reverses just before touching the ground
Either the close-limit setting has drifted or the photo-eye sensors are misaligned or dirty. Both are adjustments, not replacements.
Loud banging, grinding or scraping
Worn rollers, dry or damaged hinges, or a stripped opener gear. Grinding from the opener head usually means the nylon gear has worn through.
Cold snaps and the door sticks shut
Ice bonds the bottom seal to the slab and the opener reads the resistance as an obstruction. Clearing the seal and adjusting force settings solves it.

FAQ
Garage Door Repair questions
Can a garage door be repaired instead of replaced?
Most of the time, yes. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, openers and individual panels are all replaceable. Replacement makes sense when the door sections are rusted through, badly bent across several panels, or when the door is old enough that better insulation would be worth the investment.
How long does a typical repair take?
A spring or cable replacement is usually completed in a single visit of one to two hours. Opener repairs and track work are similar. Panel replacement can take longer because the section has to be ordered to match your door.
Is it safe to keep using a door with a broken spring?
No. With one spring broken the door is effectively unbalanced and the opener, cables and remaining spring are all overloaded. Leave the door closed and call for service.
Do you repair garage doors in winter?
Yes, and Quebec winters are when many failures appear. Cold makes steel brittle, thickens opener grease and freezes bottom seals to the slab, so spring breaks and force-setting problems cluster in January and February.
